Sargent’s Women: Four Lives Behind the Canvas by Donna M. Lucey
Edition read: Kindle, 2017
Impressive research into four women behind portraits by John Singer Sargent. The gossipy tone and contemporary language is often jarring, but this will not detract overmuch for lovers of the great painter’s work, although this is not the book to give art purists or the stiff-necked among your reader friends. One comes away with a much sharper sense of the man and his times, how he worked with portrait subjects, and heightened awareness of the difficulty of being female in his era.
